“Responsible Pain Medicine during a Drug Overdose Epidemic” with speaker Travis N. Rieder, PhD. Dr. Travis Rieder is a Research Scholar at the Johns Hopkins University's Berman Institute of Ethics and author of the book In Pain: A Bioethicist's Personal Struggle With Opioids. In 2015 Travis almost lost his foot after a very serious motorcycle accident. Although he had the privilege of being well connected at one of the country's leading medical institutions he faced enormous painful challenges when he tried to wean himself off of opioids that had been prescribed following five surgical interventions. His story is riveting and as a result of his unfortunate predicament he has refocused his bioethics career on exploring better paradigms for physicians to deal with the multifaceted opioid epidemic.
