AMA announces CPT® code ready for third dose of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.
Recently, the American Medical Association (AMA) announced that the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code set would be ready for the rollout of third doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. Now, the CPT Editorial Panel has expedited approval of a new administration code that is unique to a third dose of the current COVID-19 vaccine from Moderna. For quick reference, the CPT codes and long descriptors assigned to third dose administration of the current Moderna COVID-19 vaccine are:

0013A
Immunization administration by intramuscular injection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, mRNA-LNP, spike protein, preservative free, 100 mcg/0.5 mL dosage; third dose.

These CPT codes and descriptors are used to report the actual work of administering the vaccine, in addition to all necessary counseling provided to patients or caregivers and updating the electronic record.

Short, medium and long descriptors for all the new vaccine-specific CPT codes can be accessed on the AMA website, along with several other recent modifications to the CPT code set that have helped streamline the public health response to the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the COVID-19 disease.

  • Fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear a mask outdoors, except in certain crowded settings and venues.
  • Clarification that fully vaccinated workers no longer need to be restricted from work following an exposure as long as they are asymptomatic.

CPT® codes for Novavax vaccine for COVID-19 are here

The CPT Editorial Panel has updated the code set to include vaccine and administration codes that are unique to the COVID-19 vaccine candidate under development by Novavax Inc. The CPT codes are provisional and will be effective for use on the condition that the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine receives approval or emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

For quick reference, the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine has been assigned the following Category I CPT code and long descriptor:

91304
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, recombinant spike protein nanoparticle, saponin-based adjuvant, preservative free, 5 mcg/0.5mL dosage, for intramuscular use

In addition to the new vaccine-specific product CPT code, the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine has been issued a vaccine administration CPT code that is specific to its two-dose immunization schedule. For quick reference, the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine has been assigned the following vaccine administration CPT codes and long descriptors:

0041A
Immunization administration by intramuscular injection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, recombinant spike protein nanoparticle, saponin-based adjuvant, preservative free, 5 mcg/0.5mL dosage; first dose

0042A
Immunization administration by intramuscular injection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, recombinant spike protein nanoparticle, saponin-based adjuvant, preservative free, 5 mcg/0.5mL dosage; second dose

For full context, the short, medium and long descriptors for all the new vaccine-specific CPT codes can be accessed on the AMA website. Questions on CPT coding and content should be directed to the CPT Network, the authoritative source for CPT coding answers. You can also consult the AMA online library of COVID-19 CPT coding and guidance.

Free tool to find the right COVID-19 vaccine CPT® code
The AMA has developed a free tool to help clinical staff determine the appropriate Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code combination for the type and dose of vaccine that they are using. It uses a series of questions to help you arrive at the appropriate code. These codes incorporate the specialized tracking needs of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid by identifying two code groups. One group identifies a specific vaccine product and the other provides a vaccine administration code that is both vaccine and dose specific.

Please visit the website to see the vaccine calculator for yourself. It is a useful tool in the response to COVID-19.
