Possibility of claims denials if you are not in Medicare's PECOS system before 1/1/10

Beginning January 1st, if the ordering practitioner for any DME or orthotics is not in PECOS, a claim for DME or orthotics will be denied. Before you think this may not apply to you, orthopedists and other specialties do often order and bill for, at the least, cast supplies to the DMERC. An organization that owns a DME company (such as the parent of some hospices) will also be impacted. Oncologists and other physicians who provide pumps. Ophthalmology practices selling eye glasses. company that you order from will have its claims denied 2 ½ months from now if the ordering physician is not found in PECOS. it is advisable to begin checking PECOS for yourselves and all physicians/NPPs members of your practice and, where one is not listed, begin the enrollment process. This type of effort is now being directed towards having all provider enrollment occur on-line/electronically A provider is considered as enrolled in Medicare for the purpose of ordering /referring a service to a beneficiary if they are found in the PECOS file. All providers should be verifying their enrollment on the CMS on-line enrollment systems known as Internet-based PECOS. To find out moreabout enrolling in PECOS, go to:
